if NOGZIP is not set, these three vars are overidable: GZIP, GZIPFLAGS &
GZIPEXT.  Also do some s/install/\${INSTALL}/ edits

then making a snapshot - also add a target for creating and copying
the GENERIC kernel

in the Makefile:
