14.
Create or verify a user named
<username>
in the specified registry, and
 15. save the credentials to the
.npmrc
file. If no registry is specified,
 16. the default registry will be used (see
npm-config(7)
).

 17.
The username, password, and email are read in from prompts.

 18.
To reset your password, go to https://www.npmjs.com/forgot

 19.
To change your email address, go to https://www.npmjs.com/email-edit

 20.
You may use this command multiple times with the same user account to
 21. authorize on a new machine. When authenticating on a new machine,
 22. the username, password and email address must all match with
 23. your existing record.

 24.

npm login
is an alias to
adduser
and behaves exactly the same way.

 25.
CONFIGURATION

 26.
registry

 27.
Default: https://registry.npmjs.org/

 28.
The base URL of the npm package registry. If
scope
is also specified,
 29. this registry will only be used for packages with that scope.
scope
defaults
 30. to the scope of the project directory you're currently in, if any. See
npm-scope(7)
.

 31.
scope

 32.
Default: none

 33.
If specified, the user and login credentials given will be associated
 34. with the specified scope. See
npm-scope(7)
. You can use both at the same time,
 35. e.g.

 36.

npm adduser --registry=http://myregistry.example.com --scope=@myco

This will set a registry for the given scope and login or create a user for
 37. that registry at the same time.

 38.
always-auth

 39.
Default: false

 40.
If specified, save configuration indicating that all requests to the given
 41. registry should include authorization information. Useful for private
 42. registries. Can be used with
--registry
and / or
--scope
, e.g.

 43.

npm adduser --registry=http://private-registry.example.com --always-auth

This will ensure that all requests to that registry (including for tarballs)
 44. include an authorization header. This setting may be necessary for use with
 45. private registries where metadata and package tarballs are stored on hosts with
 46. different hostnames. See
always-auth
in
npm-config(7)
for more details on
 47. always-auth. Registry-specific configuration of
always-auth
takes precedence
 48. over any global configuration.

 49.
auth-type

 50.

 51.
Default:
'legacy'

 52.
Type:
'legacy'
,
'sso'
,
'saml'
,
'oauth'

 54.
What authentication strategy to use with
adduser
/
login
. Some npm registries
 55. (for example, npmE) might support alternative auth strategies besides classic
 56. username/password entry in legacy npm.
