Recent Single Unix will malloc memory if the second argument of realpath()

is NULL, and third-party software is starting to rely upon this.
Adapted from FreeBSD via Jona Joachim (jaj ; hcl-club , .lu), with minor
tweaks from nicm@ and yours truly.
